A commonplace daily event in any dozen countries- except that this rebel is the son of the countrys Chief Justice, and the nephew of a Cabinet minister.

The family is ordered to pretend that the man has died in a car accident, then bury an empty coffin with pomp and ceremony, to crush the rumors. And what happens to the family? The old Chief Justices world collapses, his only wish now to die, but first to get his youngest son to America, to Thomas Jeffersons America, where he believes the last battle would be fought.

He finally gets his wish, thanks to the courage of a U.S. consul who gives his son a visa, while echoing the American Indians battle cry: It is a good day to die.The uncle, the survival artist, the turncoat rebel turned Cabinet minister, the man who has never paid the full price for anything, survives and prospers. The mother suffers and endures, finding solace in daily religious rituals and the slim possibility that the disappeared son might one day miraculously reappear. The young brother, the ironic hero of the novel, numbed to the bone, puts his emotional life on hold and goes on a seventeen year long binge, while waiting for America to happen to him.

He becomes an unimpassioned witness. An actor by temperament and by choice, he learns to confuse acting and living, by creating multiple protective layers of the self. An ironic Christ figure, a savior unable to save himself, of a world that would not be saved, it is finally he who must validate every other characters life experience. The novel opens, not on a Good Friday, but on a Friday the thirteenth, the anniversary birthday of the disappeared son, the anniversary of the fathers death, and now the night of the mothers death, while the ironic hero is trying to drink himself into oblivion.

The weekend that follows spans across the first six parts of the novel. In the seventh and last part, a finally sobered protagonist goes back to the hell of his old world, looking for a key with which he can open the door of America, his America, the personal America that has to be rediscovered, again and again, by each generation and by each individual, if the idea of America is to survive.
